Air conditioners play a crucial role in the daily lives of people in hot and humid in Malaysia, but many are unaware of their significance. Whether at home or in a business setting, air conditioners are essential for cooling down rooms and ensuring the comfort of occupants around the clock.

Despite their importance, most AC unit owners lack knowledge of how air conditioners function and the numerous advantages they offer. In this article, we will guide you through the fundamental principles behind air conditioning, empowering you to identify and address any issues early on for prompt repair and maintenance.

How Does an Aircon Work?

To gain a better understanding of how air conditioners operate, it can be helpful to draw a comparison with refrigerators. In essence, these two household appliances operate using similar mechanisms and processes. The key difference is that a refrigerator is designed to cool a small and insulated space, while an air conditioner is meant to cool a larger area such as a room, home or office.

Air conditioning systems function by circulating a refrigerant or coolant through a series of four steps – compression, condensation, expansion, and evaporation – across four primary components: the compressor, condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator.

Steps

The first step in the process involves the movement of low pressure coolant to the compressor, where it exits as high-pressure gas.

The high-pressure refrigerant then proceeds to the condenser, where it is condensed into a liquid state, releasing heat into the surrounding environment.

Next, the high-pressure refrigerant travels through a thermal expansion valve, causing a pressure-drop that leads to further cooling. The refrigerant reaches its lowest temperature at this point before moving to the evaporator.

In the evaporator, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the room, further cooling the surroundings.

This cycle repeats continuously until the desired temperature, as set by a thermostat, is achieved in your room, home, or office. The refrigerant returns to being low-pressure gas and re-enters the condenser, starting the process anew.

Why Aircon is important?

Air conditioners play a crucial role in ensuring comfort and well-being at home or in the workplace. Here are some reasons why they are important:

  1. Reduction of heat and humidity – An efficiently functioning air conditioning system helps reduce discomfort due to extreme heat and humidity. By creating a cool and comfortable environment, occupants are more likely to be productive and avoid heat-related illnesses.
  2. Better air quality – Air conditioning units are capable of filtering and removing air pollutants, such as allergens, mold, and bacteria. This is particularly beneficial for those with allergies, asthma, or respiratory-related illnesses.
  3. Prevention of dehydration and excessive sweating – Air conditioners keep you cool and comfortable, preventing excessive sweating and potential dehydration. This can help avoid fatigue-induced disorders due to extreme heat and sweating.
  4. Improvement of sleep patterns – By regulating room temperature for maximum comfort, air conditioners can help improve sleep quality, ensuring a good night’s sleep.
  5. Protection of furniture and items – The use of air conditioning units not only benefits human health but also protects furniture and items. It prevents wood from warping, leather from rotting, and fabrics from accumulating mold.
